Have you ever see a Lil Twister Pinwheel Quilt? You start with this:
And by using the Lil Twister Pinwheel Quilt Template (for 5″ squares) by Country Schoolhouse (and sewing the new squares together) you come out with this:
The first time I tried to cut out the squares I cut into the next row of squares 😦 I put this project on hold until my sister-in-law came to visit. Thanks to Angi for helping me figure out what I was doing wrong.
Note to self: Don’t run the rotary cutter all the way to the corners – cut the corners out with scissors.
Oh, and since I was wearing a left wrist brace (due to spraining my wrist) at the time, I had to be creative in holding down the template. I ended up using a full can of Chili (about 15 oz) as a weight and then holding the can. The worst problem was my hand was definitely hurting by the time I was done.
I think it turned out pretty good. What have you made lately?

It is beautiful! I want to start quilting and someone told me to start with a runner, but this one is way more than I can handle. Do you have a pattern for a simple one and/or a suggestion? Debbie

Thanks for the nice comment. There are so many simple ideas out there. One I just saw was this one from the Moda (which is a fabric line) Bake Shop:

You could always use scraps to make this potholder (which has all the components of a table runner and/or quilt). You could also increase the size of this to be a table runner really easily.

A can of chili? That is creative. I think it turned out beautifully! I haven’t made much lately, done some tie dying but thats about it – I really need to bust my sewing machine out again!

Thank you. With a sister-in-law on vacation at our house for a few days I had to be creative! The can was small enough that it was in the middle of the plastic template (so I could cut around it), heavy enough to hold down the template and my hand could fit around it would bending my wrist too much.
